9TH ANNUAL BTLN ALUMNI





It was the Ninth Btln Alumni Night and the fifth time that we have given a Sergeant Jersey at Alumni Night. Justin Bekker was the 14th Sergeant to receive his Sergeant Jersey in our "One forward and one back" Sergeant Jersey program! So proud that Justin was and still is a part of Btln 3739! Justin served as Sergeant for a year and a half. (September 2000 - January 2002)

Justin was also one of two men that we inducted into the Btln Ring of Honour! Every second year we will be adding to the Ring of Honour. This year we added Justin Bekker and Ryley Heppner. Two years ago Dan Trithardt had his name inducted into the Ring of Honor but was not able to attend Alumni Night. This year Ryley was unable to attend Alumni Night. So this year we gave Dan and Justin their Ring of Honor mugs! I just love the Sergeant Jerseys and the Ring of Honor! So many good men in Btln 3739, so many good examples! These men are proof that the Truth that we are teaching at Btln truly makes a difference when put into practice!


Hebrews 12:1-2   Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.


We played 8 games of Murderball! I just love Murderball at Alumni! (So many head shots!) My team dominated early, it was 3-1. After 6 games Jeremy's team battled back to tie the series 3-3. My team would not be denied the win, taking the next two games and winning the best of nine series 5-3!

According to Btln Alumni tradition, the current Sergeant is in the middle for Bulldog. This has to be a little intimidating! Jonathan definitely rose to the challenge! It wasn't long before we only had Parker and Drew left. On the last round Drew gained more yards than Parker, taking the win and the Yorkie! Congrats Drew!

So many highlights this year. One of my favourites was listening to all the men say the Btln watchword together at the end of the night! It was spine tingling! I wish I could revisit that moment in time! So amazing!

After the gym we moved the party to Bruce and Katie's. I am so thankful to Bruce and Katie for inviting us into their house each and every year!

I am also thankful that so many guys made time for Btln Alumni Night. Christmas is a busy time of year and the roads can be dangerous. Thanks to all the came out to Alumni Night 2014!

BTLN BIRTHDAYS - DECEMBER


What an awesome time of year! In December we celebrate Jesus' birth. We remember the peace, hope and joy that Jesus' birth brought to all of his creation! We hope and pray that all of those having birthdays this month will experience God's peace, hope and joy again this year!

WINSTON STANDINGS UPDATE



Can't believe that the First Half of the 2014/15 Btln Season is over! After fifteen weeks Luke has opened up a small lead in the race for Winston. Will Luke be able to build on his lead in the Second Half? Will someone be able to catch him? Who will break the log jam for second place? There will also be fifteen weeks in the Second Half. That means fifteen Helmets yet to be won! That's a lot of Bulldog! Can't wait to see how this will end! Good luck to all!

BTLN UPDATE - THE THREE B'S




Congrats Jake! This was Jakes first Helmet of the 2014/15 Btln Season!

What a crazy night! We had close to fifty guys in the gym! It felt a lot like the way Last Night of Battalion feels. We ate eight extra large Battalion Baconator pizzas from Rumours and we drank 5 cases of Barq's rootBeer!

After the pizza and rootBeer we moved upstairs to play some MurderBall! MurderBall is crazy when you have 50 guys playing, there are Balls flying everywhere! The first game was awesome! Both teams Battled hard and the game lasted for a long time Because Both teams did not want to lose the first game. Finally, Ben and Jeremy's team took the first game. The second and third games were not nearly as close. Jeremy and Ben's team Beating my team three games in a row!

Next we went into the fireside room were we watched a slideshow of pictures from Creation 2014! I was hoping that the slideshow would inspire some new guys to complete the Memory Work. Nearly 20 guys took a Memory Work list, so I am hoping (and praying) that we will see a Bunch of new faces at Creation 2015!

After the slideshow we went Back to the Btln room were we consumed over 100 Bonuts! It was amazing how fast they disappeared!

We ended the night with Bulldog and just like MurderBall, Bulldog is crazy with 50 guys! At the end, there were only grade nines left to fight it out for the Helmet! Jake outlasted his fellow grade nines, taking the win and the Helmet!

BTLN UPDATE



Congrats Harley! This was Harley's first ever Helmet! Jake was there at the end with Harley, but Harley would not be denied his first Helmet! It was a well deserved win. Congratulations Harley!

This week we played Handball. This was only the second time this year that we have played Handball! (Besides the times we have played it as a part of the Btln Trifecta.) We had so many guys that we needed to add a third ball! It is almost impossible for the guys playing goal and defense to keep track of three balls, but they all did an amazing job! Even with three balls it wasn't easy to score! Tyson and Nathan's team battled back from 20-18 to make the score 20-20 but at the end fell one goal short. The final score was 21- 20 for Ben and Noah's team!

In Bible study this week we looked at the Christmas story. (Luke 2:1-20)

Luke 2:10   But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.

What was the good news that the angels were telling the shepherds about? What was the "good news that would cause great joy for all people"?

1 Timothy 1:15a   Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

Romans 3:23-24   For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Since we all have sinned and constantly fall short of the glory of God, the only thing that could be considered good news would be, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners!

Romans 10:12b-13   The same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

BTLN UPDATE - THE 20TH BTLN OLYMPICS




Congratulations to Luke, the 2014 Btln Olympic Champion! What an awesome night! 35 guys competed in the 20th Battalion Olympics! 35 competitors is a new Btln Olympic record! The old record was 32 competitors in 2012. With so many guys competing, time is of essence! For the older guys there is so much work to be done to climb from top to bottom on all five pyramids! Since adding Bench Wrestling in 2011 the scores have been closer from top to bottom and there has been a grade seven finishing in the top three, three out of the past four years!

BTLN UPDATE



Congrats Noah! This is Noah's second Helmet of the Btln Season! At the end it was Nate and Noah. On the last round Nate was stopped just short of the wall giving Noah the win! I don't think that the race for Winston has ever been this close between six guys!

At the beginning of the night we had the Btln Olympic equipment set up! This week was the Olympic warm-up! Next week is the 20th Battalion Olympics! That's right, 20th Battalion Olympics! So stoked for next week!

Next week is the Btln Olympics and this week was S*A*M! S*A*M is as much fun to watch as it is to play! The 16 glow in the dark Murderballs and nearly 80 glow sticks make S*A*M trippy to play! My team won the first two games of S*A*M. It looked like we would not lose a game, but Ben's team battled back to win the third game. After three we were out of time, my team winning 2-1!

At Christmas time we focus on Jesus' birth and at Easter we focus on his death and resurrection.
This week we looked at Jesus existence before his birth and after his ascension to heaven.

Colossians 1:15-17   The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Hebrews 1:3   The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

Hebrews 1:8-10   But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

John 1:1-3   In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

In these passages we find out that Jesus as God is, the Creator and Sustainer of all things!

What has Jesus been doing since his ascension to heaven?

Romans 8:34   Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to lifeis at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Hebrews 7:25   Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

Hebrews 9:24   For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.

Jesus is at the right hand of God and he is interceding for us! This is a full time job!

This next passage gives us a glimpse of heaven!

Revelation 5:11-14   Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

BTLN UPDATE



Congrats Ben! This is Ben's second Helmet of the Btln Season! At the end it was Ben and Noah, seems like these guys do everything as a team! It was just the two of them for about three rounds, and then finally Noah went down, giving Ben the win!

For the first time this year we played Stickball! I love the games that have four corners and four teams, like Mike, Mike 23 and Stickball! The game was closer this time around than in the past, giving us a closer finish and more suspense.

In Bible study this week our topic was, "Why do bad things happen to good people".

This is not an easy topic or one that everyone is going to agree on, but at Btln we are not afraid to try and tackle these tough questions!

Matthew 19:17   And he (Jesus) said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God:

Isaiah 64:6   All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Romans 3:10-11   As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.

These passages teach us that without God none of us are good!

Romans 6:23   For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Our sin has earned us death! What a dreadful position we would be in if it wasn't for God's free gift of eternal life!  Jesus took the death that we earned! (At the cross.) Amazing!

Romans 8:22-24   We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

Even if we have accepted Christ's free gift of salvation we will still have to endure troubles. The difference for us as believers is, that we have God to help us through these troubles!

Romans 8:18   I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

The key is, to look to our future in heaven with Christ!

BTLN UPDATE



Congrats Luke! This is the third Helmet of the season for Luke! At the end of Bulldog we were down to Nate and Luke. Both Nate and Luke were taken down on the last round, but it was to close to call a winner! We reset and went one more round. (Who wouldn't one more round of Bulldog?) In the final round, Nate was tackled halfway across the gym, while Luke was able to make it through the maze of guys to the end of the gym!

This week we played Murderball! This used to be a common thing at Battalion, but lately we have been playing other games. (A kinder and gentler Btln?) In the first game my team dominated. Ben's team would not go down easily, they battled hard, but could not beat us in the first game. In the second game the tides turned! Ben's team beat us easily, setting up a third game. In the third, Ben's team continued what they started in the second game. Ben's team won the third game, taking the series 2-1!

In Bible study we looked at Jesus' death and resurrection.
(Matthew 27:32-54 and 1 Corinthians 15:1-8)

Ben talked about the importance of Remembrance Day and how we should be thankful for the freedom and peace that we have, because of the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers. Ben reminded us that we need to be even more thankful for the sacrifice that Jesus made, to give us peace with God and freedom from our sin!

Romans 6:18a   You have been set free from sin.

Romans 8:1-2   Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 5:1-2   Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.

Colossians 1:19-20   For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him(Jesus), and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

WINSTON UPDATE



After nine weeks and one Battalion Major it is time for a Winston Standings update! At this point of the Btln Season we have a three way tie for first place! I am not sure if the standings could be closer after nine weeks! As expected the grade elevens and twelves are dominating the Winston Standings. There are only six more weeks left in the first half of the 2014/15 Btln Season! Who will have the lead at the end of the first half?

BTLN UPDATE - ROYAL RUMBLE TEN





Congrats Tyler! Tyler is the Royal Rumble Ten Champion! Thirty-seven guys competed for the belt! There were 10 Heavyweights (grade 10 - 12) and 27 Lightweights (grade 7-10)! The grade nines are a huge group and are a force to be reckoned with! Next year the grade nines will all be moving into the Heavyweight Division, it's going to be crazy!

The Lightweights battled for about 40 minutes before the Heavyweights started to join them in the ring. There were so many Lightweights left in the ring that it became dangerous for the Heavyweights entering the ring. Eventually, the Heavyweights eliminated James, the last of the Lightweights! Congrats James! It is big deal to outlast 26 other guys in the ring!

It looked like there were two different teams in the Heavyweight Division. Jonathan, Nate and Tyler were in one corner and Luke, Ben and Noah were in the other. Ben was injured and had to leave early. Jonathan was next out of the ring, leaving Luke and Noah in one corner and Nate and Tyler in the other. Gabe was the wild card of the final five. Gabe was the next to be eliminated. Shortly after both Luke and Noah were gone! Tyler and Nate were the final two in the ring. Tyler and Nate battled, but in the end, Nate was too exhausted to continue, giving Tyler the win!

BTLN PREVIEW - ROYAL RUMBLE TEN





That's right, it has been ten years since we first revealed the boxing ring! Eight men have won the Royal Rumble. Six Sergeants, eight grade twelve's and one grade eleven. Will the trends from years past continue? Is there someone that can break the trends from the past? Can't wait to find out!

BTLN UPDATE



Congrats Noah! This was Noah's first Helmet of the year. Noah was second or third nearly every week this year! It was only a matter of time before Noah would win his first Helmet of the 2014/15 Btln Season! Nate was there at the end, but Noah would not be denied this time!

23 Balls and 30 boys playing Mike 23 this week at Btln!  Mike 23 is as much fun as it is chaotic! There are balls and bodies flying everywhere! So much fun! The lead changed hands nearly every round, it was awesome!

In Bible study we looked at the story of Paul and Silas in prison in Philippi. (Acts 16:16-34)

Acts 16:22-24   The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

Paul and Silas were badly beaten and thrown into prison for serving God. You would think that Paul and Silas would have been questioning God, but instead they were praising God!

Acts 16:25   About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

Paul and Silas reacted this way because they had the peace of God!

Philippians 4:6-7   Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

The peace of God comes from a knowledge of the Scriptures. When we understand God's plan for our lives, and what he has in store for us, we will have greater peace in our lives. The question is, what did Paul and Silas know that gave them peace?

Philippians 3:20-21   But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Ephesians 2:6-7   And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 1:3   Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Ephesians 3:20-21   Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Paul and Silas knew that even though they were in prison, that they were actually seated in the heavenly realms! Paul and Silas also knew that God was going to bless them more than they could ask or imagine! These truths apply to all of us that have accepted God's free gift! God not only gives us salvation, he also blesses us and gives us his peace!

BTLN UPDATE



Congrats to Ben! This is Ben's first Helmet of the year! Finally someone other than Jonathan, Luke or Nate winning the Helmet! At the end it was Ben and Noah fighting for the Helmet. Both Ben and Noah were stopped on the last round, but Ben gained five yards more forward progress than Noah.

This week we played the Trifecta. We started with Handball. Ben's team was up 3-1, 4-2 and 6-4 but my team battled back to win 8-6! (Great goaltending again at both ends! Ben and Noah at one end and Jake and Tyson at the other end.) Next we played Murderball. My team won the first game and Ben's team won the second game, setting up a third and final game! The last game was the closest of the three that we played, but in the end it was my team taking the win and the Trifecta! (I'm on a winning streak this year!)

This week in Bible study we talked about "Peace with God" and the "Peace of God". In Romans chapter five we find out that we were sinners, ungodly and God's enemies before we accepted God's forgiveness!

Romans 5:6   You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

Romans 5:8   But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:10   For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

As God's enemies we needed peace with God! We can have forgiveness and peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ!

Romans 5:1-2   Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.

Once we have made peace with God we can receive God's peace to help us in our time of need!

Romans 15:13   May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Colossians 3:15   Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

2 Thessalonians 3:16   Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

Philippians 4:6-7   Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

With God's peace we don't have to be anxious about anything!

BTLN UPDATE - BTLN BASEBALL


 

Congrats to Luke on his second Helmet of the Btln Season! There is now a three way tie for first in the race for Winston! Luke is now tied with Jonathan and Nate! Should be an interesting race this year!

It has been three years since Btln 3739 has played baseball at James Donaldson Park. It was way too long in between games! The weather in the past has not been kind, but this year guys were playing in shorts and t-shirts! It was awesome!

Jason, Noah and Ben's team beat Tyler and Drew's team. The final score was 11-8. The quality of baseball is never that good, but still so much fun!

It was so good to have Tyler Francis show up for Baseball, I just love it when Alumni show up from out of town! So much fun to shag flies with the Alumni after the game!

Thanks to Noah for helping set things up! Noah has the keys to the James Donaldson Park Kingdom! We have never had the infield raked before!

Thanks to Jeff (Isaac's Dad) for umpiring the game! It was awesome to have a real umpire!

BTLN PREVIEW - BATTALION BASEBALL "UNDER THE LIGHTS"



That's right, this week we will be eating Menno and playing Baseball under the lights of James Donaldson Park! Can't wait!

BTLN UPDATE - MIKE NIGHT

 



What a night! We had a bunch of new guys come out to play Mike! It was our largest crowd of the 2014/15 Btln Season!

Congrats to Jonathan on his second Helmet of the Btln Season! So far this year Nate and Jonathan have been dominating the race for Winston! Can they be beaten? Luke has one win and Ben and Noah are always there at the end. Can't wait to see how this will end!

Mike Night always seems to draw a crowd, and this week wasn't any different. Mike is very unique, I guess that is why it is so intriguing. This time around we had some larger and different balls, making Mike even better. (As if this were possible!) The game was very even. At one point, all four teams were tied at 10! As the game went on Nathan's team and Nate's team both pulled away. Nate's and Nathan's teams ended up tied for first! We broke the tie with one round of Rock-Paper-Scissors. Nate defeating Nathan, Rock-Scissors! It was an awesome way to end the game!

Last week in Bible study we looked at Romans 7 and Paul's struggle with his old and new natures. This week we moved on to Romans 8. Just because we will struggle at times with these two natures does not mean that we cannot be secure in our salvation!

Romans 8:31   What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

This verse should give us confidence! Not in ourselves, but in the God of the universe that is for us! Who else would you want as an ally?

Romans 8:33   Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

1 Peter 1:18-19   For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

God has chosen and justified us! God paid for us with Jesus' precious blood so that we could be justified!

Romans 8:34   Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Romans 8:1-2   Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

No one can condemn those that are in Christ! Christ has paid for our sin and is now interceding for us!

Romans 8:38-39   For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing in all of creation can separate us from the love of God! This should give us confidence in our God and in our eternal destiny!
